COUNTRY PROFILE

Nepal is among the poorest and least developed countries in the world, with about one-quarter of its population living below the poverty line. Nepal is heavily dependent on remittances, which amount to as much as 29% of GDP. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, providing a livelihood for almost 70% of the population and accounting for about one-third of GDP. Industrial activity mainly involves the processing of agricultural products, including pulses, jute, sugarcane, tobacco, and grain.

In 2015, 339.000 children have not see the face of college. They have no choices or the power to determine their future. Two-thirds of all children in Nepal attend public schools, and every year a significant majority of these students fail to graduate from secondary school. If 100 children enroll in grade one, only 30% of them stay in school.
About 70% children drop out of the school system. Over 90% of students who fail the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) fail in Maths, English, or Science. At grade four, 25% of students cannot count double digit numbers.

Health care facilities, hygiene, nutrition and sanitation in Nepal are of poor quality, particularly in the rural areas. The poor have limited access to basic health care due to its high costs and low availability. The demand for health services is further lowered by the lack of health education. Reproductive health care is neglected, putting women at a disadvantage. Individuals who lack a citizenship are marginalized and are denied access to government welfare benefits. Traditional beliefs have also been shown to play a significant role in the spread of disease in Nepal.

Kathmandu is the capital city of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, and the largest Himalayan state in Asia with a population about 1 million residents. Kathmandu is the spiritual, cultural and economic center of Nepal. A
cosmopolitan city, it is home people of different ethnic groups and religions, within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu.

These problems have led Youth Center to Act for Nations (YOUCAN) interested to implement communication  programs encouraging people to engage in healthy behavior such as family planning, and spousal communication, safe motherhood practices, and use of skilled birth attendants during delivery and practice of immediate breastfeeding.

One of the major psychological issues for adolescents is developing a better understanding of themselves. This means that the component of self awareness is crucial to a youth leadership development program. Youth would be given time to reflect on their own values, talents, and skills and ways in which they could best use their abilities to provide service for others. Attempts would also be made to place individual values & goals into a cultural context to assist youth in better understanding the impact of their cultures on their own values & plans.
